On Tuesday July 16 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) took enforcement action against the independent Breightmet Centre for Autism, in Bolton following inspections in June and July which raised concerns about the quality of the environment in which the patients were being cared for.

The action, against owners ASC Healthcare Ltd, included removing the centre’s registration.

Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has agreed to temporarily take on the management of the 19-bed centre, working with ASC Healthcare staff. This arrangement has been put in place, in discussion with the CQC, in order to minimise disruption to the patients there, who have very complex needs and come from different parts of the country.

NHS England and Improvement, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, Mersey Care, CCG commissioners, patients’ families, the CQC, and ASC Healthcare are now working together to ensure everyone has the most appropriate ongoing care.
